My father was born Felicisimo De Loyola on October 26, 1925. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17 and it was at that time he changed his name to Frank De Loyola. I can clearly hear the tales of my father’s youth as if it were yesterday. First that comes to mind was his huge appetite to see new places and experience new things, which largely impacted his decision to join the Navy. My father (whom we called Pops) was not an academic person but rather, with aggressive street smarts, was considered a survivor. Not a thug or bully per se, but someone who could not be intimidated and/or taken advantage of. Although eager to see the world, he also knew that earning US dollars would allow him to provide for his present and future family. These were the deciding factors in joining the Navy who he came to love and of which he had great pride. Pops dedicated 25 years of his life to the Navy. During this time he was able to fulfill his dream of seeing the world. He visited many countries and cities throughout the but there remains one place that touched his heart and chose to call his “home away from home”… the San Francisco Bay Area. This is where I was born and much like my Pops, this will always be my home.
I have 3 sisters, 2 of which were also born in
San Francisco . My Pops was stationed in
Okinawa, during the Vietnam War and it was in there my other sister was born. My years as a toddler were spent in
Okinawa and amazingly enough I spoke fluent Japanese. Unfortunately, the only Japanese I know today is Domo Arigato.
Our family grew up in the Mission District. We first lived at
Valencia
Gardens for a few years with the help of the Housing Assistance Programs. Always striving to provide a better home for his family my Pops moved us to several apartments throughout the Mission District, each apartment being slightly better than the last. We attended
Marshall
Elementary School for a few years. Always, always striving to provide more for his family my father transferred us to
Mission
Dolores
Elementary school ; a private Catholic school. He always “went for it” when it came to his family. A trait our family shares because of him, because of his sacrifices.
The Mission District became my playground. As a young boy I went on expeditions of my own, discovering new areas of the city every chance I got. My means of transportation always included numbers: 14 (
Mission ), 22 (Fillmore), 15 (Third) etc. Like half the population of
San Francisco , I made my way by bus. It really doesn’t matter how you get there; what matters is that you do.
Years later my Pops took advantage of his VA loan to purchase his first home, our first home. He was a proud man and we were proud of him. My Pops left all he knew in the Philippines, joined the Navy and accomplished all his dreams; seeing the world, experiencing new things, and first and foremost, providing a home for his family. My Pops is my eternal hero.
Homeowner ship is the American dream and in memory of my father, I have dedicated his American name, Frank, as our company name JFrank Capital Mortgage.
Prior to entering the real estate mortgage industry, I was a recruiter for 13 years during the dotcom era of the 1990’s. That was an interesting and exciting time. I remember that customer service, follow-ups, networking, and phone calls were integral components of success. I also remember the joy and satisfaction in placing people in jobs where both parties would succeed. I am grateful that quite a few of my recruits remain my close friends today. I found helping people very gratifying. On my spare time, I also excelled as a loan agent. The two industries had great similarities in regards to helping people. It was no wonder I enjoyed both.
Unfortunately during the dotcom collapse, like so many others I was laid off. I was forced to make a career decision – what do I want to do? What makes sense to me, my life and my beliefs? I chose the Mortgage Industry. I truly can relate to the struggles of the average American Family. And with all my Pops did for us, I wanted to do what I can to help others achieve what we did… home ownership.
